This training program has been revised and updated to meet the current federal and state regulations and to provide additional content that supports the competencies that nursing directors should know and be able to perform. Modular content will help experienced nursing directors in refining skills and certainly the novice director will learn in detail about the job. The more experienced directors of nursing are encouraged to share their knowledge and expertise with the less experienced directors of nursing and to serve as mentors to them while they are learning. This training is appropriate for Directors of Nursing, Assistant Directors of Nursing, Nurse Supervisors/Managers, and Staff Development Coordinators.
This training course consists of eight modules developed as part of a training program for nursing directors (administrators) in long term care facilities. The eight modules are written in a competency-based format that focuses on what the nursing administrator should know and be able to do.
Experienced nursing administrators are performing with excellence and serve as leaders in long term care in Idaho. However, many registered nurses who are hired as directors of nursing in nursing homes are unaware of the knowledge and skills needed for the job. Registered nurses may lack the experience and education that would prepare them for the challenges before them in long term care.
The turnover rate of directors of nursing in long term care facilities, although not specifically known, is very high. The role of director of nursing is complex and demanding. The long term care industry is highly regulated and requires that the nursing director become knowledgeable of the many rules and regulations that she or he will apply in addition to providing the leadership for nursing personnel.
