Course Overview
- This 3-day class will take place in conjunction with the IHCA Annual Convention at the Boise Centre.
- Click the link below to register for the Convention and attend the MDS Intensive Course.
- This is NOT an AANAC Certification course.
- Spend 3-days with Robin Hillier, CPA, STNA, LNHA RAC-MT who is an AANAC Master Teacher.
Target Audience: All members of the IDT involved in the RAI assessment and care planning process but especially MDS Coordinators.
This three-day intensive is designed to support the MDS Coordinator and other key members of facility leadership such as Administrators, Directors of Nursing, Rehab Directors and Nutrition Services professionals who need to understand how the MDS effects reimbursement and quality measures. MDS staff are encouraged to attend all three days, while other team members can register for individual days or the entire intensive depending on their needs and interests.
Robin is a certified public accountant, state tested nurse aide and licensed nursing home administrator who is also resident assessment coordinator certified and a master trainer through the American Association of Nurse Assessment Coordination (AANAC).
She is President of RLH Consulting, which provides reimbursement, accounting, and operational consulting to long term care providers.
Robin is a member of AANAC’s Expert Advisory Panel and Editorial Board. Shen served as Secretary/Treasurer of the American Health Care Association Board of Governors and as a member of the OHCA Board of Directors. She is Past President of both OHCA and EFOHCA. RLH Consulting is an OHCA Platinum Champion Partner.

Objectives:
- Articulate the new items to be added to the October 1 2023 item set
- Describe changes to current assessment items effective October 1
- Explain the rationale for the item set changes effective October 1 2023
Session 2: MDS Intensive: MDS and Care Planning for the Activity Director
Objectives:
- Describe the process for interviewing residents regarding preferences
- Describe the Care area assessment process
- Articulate the care planning requirements in the RAI process
Session 3: MDS Intensive: SPADES Items Coding Instructions and Care Planning for the MDS Coordinator
Objectives:
- Articulate the new SPADES items to be added to the item set October 1 2023
- Explain the coding instructions for the new SPADES items
- Describe how to utilize the SPADES items in care planning for the Part A beneficiary

Session 1: MDS Intensive: PDPM Session 1 – PDPM Components and Drivers for Administrators, DNS and MDS Coordinators to Improve Reimbursement
Objectives:
- List the five case mix adjusted components in the Patient Driven Payment Model
- Articulate the MDS items used to drive each case mix adjusted PDPM component
- Explain the source of information for each case mix adjusted PDPM component
Session 2: MDS Intensive: PDPM Session 2 – PPS Assessment Scheduling Considerations for Administrators, DNS and MDS coordinators to Improve Reimbursement
Objectives:
- Describe the required and optional PPS assessments used in PDPM
- Explain the penalty for late assessments and missed assessments
- Articulate a strategy for selecting the best assessment reference date for PPS assessments
Session 3: MDS Intensive: Section GG – Coding Functional Status to Improve Reimbursement, Quality Measures and Care Planning for Administrators, DNS and MDS Coordinators
Objectives:
- Describe the coding instructions for Section GG in the draft RAI manual
- Articulate how self-care and mobility items are used in reimbursement and quality measures
- Explain the necessity to revise physical function care plans with the implementation of the new item set October 1
Session 4: MDS Intensive: Section I – Coding Active Diagnoses to Improve Reimbursement, Quality Measures and Care Planning for Administrators, DNS and MDS Coordinators
Objectives:
- Describe the coding instructions for Section I in the draft RAI manual
- Articulate how Section I effects reimbursement and quality measures
- Describe care planning for active diagnoses

- Describe the changes to Section O in the new item set October 1 and updates to the coding instructions
- Articulate how Section O is used in reimbursement and quality measures
- Explain care planning for special treatments, procedures and programs
Session 2: MDS Intensive: Assessment Timing and Scheduling Strategies for the MDS Coordinator
Objectives:
- Articulate overview of OBRA scheduling requirements
- Describe scheduling strategies to improve reimbursement and quality measures
- Explain the requirements for completing a significant change in status assessment

Cancellation Policy
We understand that circumstances sometimes arise that prevent you from attending an event after you have registered. IHCA works to ensure that all registrations are processed in a timely and efficient manner, and we will work with you in the event you have to cancel.
If you cancel before June 30th, we will gladly refund your registration fee less a $50 cancellation fee. We are unable to offer any refunds after June 30th. We encourage you to find someone from your facility/organization to take your place if possible, and please be sure to notify us of the request to substitute.
