Keynote by: Karl Steinberg MD, CMD, HMDC
Dr. Karl Steinberg is a long-term care geriatrician and board-certified family physician with a subspecialty certification in hospice and palliative medicine, and certifications as skilled nursing facility and hospice medical director. Dr. Steinberg got his undergraduate degree in biochemistry and molecular biology from Harvard in 1980, then taught high school in New York City for three years. He attended medical school at The Ohio State University, then completed his family medicine residency at UCSD (San Diego) in 1990. Dr. Steinberg is currently chair of the Coalition for Compassionate Care of California. He was recently appointed to the National Quality Forum’s Standing Committee on Palliative and End-of-Life Care. Dr. Steinberg serves as the Editor-in-Chief of AMDA’s monthly periodical, Caring for the Ages, which has a print circulation of 28,000 in addition to its online version. Dr. Steinberg has been a hospice and nursing home medical director since 1995 and is probably best known for taking his dogs on rounds in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and on hospice and palliative care home visits with him on most days.
David Gifford, MD, MPH, is the Senior Vice President of Quality and Regulatory Affairs at the American Health Care Association, the largest association in the country representing long term and post-acute care facilities. He helped create the department which assists providers in their quality improvement efforts and works with Administration officials on regulations and policies impacting the profession. Dr. Gifford also serves on the Board of the Advancing Excellence in America’s Nursing Homes campaign and the Baldrige Foundation Board. He is a former Director of the Rhode Island Department of Health that oversaw the state survey process and also served as Chief Medical Officer for Quality Partners of Rhode Island where he directed CMS’ national nursing home-based quality improvement effort. He received his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University and conducted his geriatric fellowship at UCLA where he also earned his Master’s in Public Health in Epidemiology.
Maureen Nash, MD, FAPA, FACP is Medical Director at Providence Elderplace Portland, one of the largest PACE programs (Programs of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly). They are an innovative model of comprehensive care that offers health, housing, social service and care coordination solutions to older adults and peace of mind to their families. As the Medical Director, she utilizes the skills of clinician, administrator, and communicator to help the interdisciplinary teams provide comprehensive quality care to seniors in a community based setting. She is board certified in both psychiatry and internal medicine. Her specialties include: Geriatric Psychiatry, End of Life Issues for Older Adults with Dementia, Medicine/Psychiatry Interface, and Public Speaking on Issues involving Dementia, Mental Health Issues, and Guardianship Issues for Older Adults. She is a sought after public speaker on topics of geriatrics and psychiatry and has served on the State Plan for Alzheimer’s Disease in Oregon Task Force, leading the medical/research subcommittee.
Dr. Abhilash Desai MD is a board certified geriatric psychiatrist and medical director of the Idaho Memory & Aging Center, PLLC. He is also adjunct associate professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, University of Washington School of Medicine. He specializes in prevention, treatment, and palliative care of neurocognitive disorders (especially Alzheimer’s disease and Vascular cognitive impairment) and long-term care psychiatry. He is co-author of book titled “Psychiatric Consultation in Long-Term Care: A guide for healthcare professionals” published in 2010 by the Johns Hopkins Press. He was also the guest editor for a special issue titled “Healthy Brain Aging: Evidence based methods to preserve brain function and prevent dementia” for Clinics of Geriatric Medicine published in 2009. Dr. Desai believes in and practices holistic approach to brain wellness that harnesses the power of neuroplasticity to achieve and maintain optimal cognitive and emotional well-being across life span. Dr Desai will be presenting with:
David Wilson is an elder law attorney with Ahrens DeAngeli Law Group; he speaks and publishes regularly on elder law issues. He holds a Juris Doctorate from Arizona State University and an LLM in Taxation from New York University. His practice focuses on estate planning for seniors with an emphasis on dealing with long term care. .
